S.L. Alexander, assistant professor of communications, addressed the national convention of the National Verbatim Reporters Association (court reporters) in New Orleans in August. Her topic was "Press Coverage of the Courts in Louisiana."

Brad Alfonso was hired as a mechanic in physical plant.

Cecelia M. Bennett, associate director in the Institute for Ministry and a member of the Women's Studies Committee, presented a paper, "Ex Corde Ecclesiae and Women's Studies" at the National Association for Women and Catholic Higher Education (NAWCHE), Symposium. The symposium titled "Making Connections V: Women and Women's Studies in the New Millennium: Forging New Models for Leadership and Change" was held in June at Boston College. Bennett discussed the topic again in October at the Women's Studies First Monday Brown Bag-Luncheons.

Associate Professor of Catholic Theology Peter J. Ber-nardi's essay, "Individuals Do Not Have a Right to Die," was reprinted in the textbook Problems of Death.

English Professor John Biguenet was featured in the September issue of Random House's online magazine, BoldType, because his story "Rose," which appeared last year in Esquire, has received an O. Henry Award. The Random House web site includes a printed version of Biguenet's story along with his photo. It also includes a RealAudio recording of his reading of the story in New York this past March at an Esquire reading at the Union Square Theater.

Biguenet's story will appear in Prize Stories 2000: The O. Henry Awards. Biguenet is one of three writers featured in the anthology. "Rose" also will be included in Biguenet's collection of stories, The Torturer's Apprentice, which will be published in early 2001 by The Ecco Press, an imprint of HarperCol- lins Publishers.

Susan Brower, media services coordinator, published an article in LEADER, the newsletter of the Consortium of College and University Media Centers. The article, "Data/Video Projector Standards" provides suggestions about what to consider when purchasing a projector to display data and video. It was published in the spring 2000 issue.

Marian Ceasar joined the Division of Institutional Advancement as an administrative assistant in development/capital campaigns.

Henry Cherry was hired in physical plant as a carpenter.

Ryan Coleman joined Residential Life as the assistant director.

Jennifer Dinsmore was hired as an assistant director of the Office of Student Activities.

Philip A. Dynia, associate professor of political science, has published three articles in the newly released Encyclopedia of the U.S. Supreme Court. The articles are: "Unprotected Speech," "Obscenity and Pornography," and "Dissents."

Christopher Eicher was hired as a technical directorin the Department of Drama and Speech.

In June Ellen Frohn-mayer, assistant professor of voice in the College of Music, was a visiting voice professor at the Brevard Festival of Music in the Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina. Frohnmayer prepared young singers from all over the nation for opera and concert performances, giving them instruction in vocal technique and song interpretation.

Valerie Guzzardi joined the College of Business Administration as an administrative assistant.

Professor of Law Bobby Marzine Harges' article, "Law Professors' Sabbatical in District Attorney's Office" will be published in the fall 2000 edition of the Touro Law Review. Additionally, his article, "The Daubert Dilemma ­ The Application of Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. to Expert Testimony of Law Enforcement Officers in Narcotics Related Cases," co-authored with Walter Amstutz, will be published in the fall 2000 edition of the University of Hawaii Law Review.

Sean Herlihy was hired in the Boggs Literacy Center as a grant writer/development specialist.

Brent Hodges joined the Office of Admissions as an admissions counselor.

Richard LaCour joined physical plant as a mechanic.

Anthony Ladd, associate professor and chair of sociology, co-authored papers presented at national meetings in Washington, D.C. The first paper, "Economic Restructuring, Political Capacity, and Pork Production in North Carolina: A Longitudinal Analysis of Intensifying Environmental Inequality," was presented at the American Sociological Association meetings. The second paper, "Where the Hogs Are: Corporate Swine Production, Environmental Injustice, and the Contradictory Role of the State," was presented at the Rural Sociological Society meetings.

Brooke Landry joined the Whelan Children's Center as a pre-school teacher.

Associate Director of Loyola Institute for Ministry Bernard Lee, S.M., published two books in early summer, The Catholic Experience of Small Christian Communities and Habits for the Journey: A Mystical and Political Spirituality for Small Christian Communities. In June, Lee gave three presentations at the National Conference of Catholic Deacons in Oakland, California, on "The Empirical and Theological Interpretation of the Small Christian Community Phenomenon in the U.S. Catholic Church." In August, he gave the keynote address at the annual meeting of the National Alliance of Parishes Restructuring into Communities, in Newark, New Jersey, on "The Ecclesiological Implications of Empirical Research on Small Church Communities."

M. Isabel Medina, associate professor of law, published "A Matter of Fact: Hostile Environments and Summary Judgments," in the University of Southern California Review of Law and Women's Studies. She also presented a paper on "A Dialogue on Deportation" at the Immigration Law Conference in San Antonio at the end of May. Medina spoke on using film and media in teaching immigration law at the conference.

In January, Medina was a guest on WWL radio's "The Andre Show" to discuss a case pending before the U.S. Supreme Court involving parental rights. In March, she addressed the Association for Women Attorneys of New Orleans on "The Status of Women in the Law." Medina also served as judge for the Tulane Mardi Gras Sports Law Invitational Tournament, the University of Texas John R. Brown Admiralty Tournament, and for the ABA Regional Mediation Advocacy Competition sponsored by Tulane Law School and University of Texas Law School. As a member of the Loyola Women's Studies Committee, Medina arranged a reading by Jennifer Moses of her most recent book, Food and Whine, last spring. In conjunction with the Association for Women Attorneys and the Loyola Women's Center, Medina arranged to bring a one-woman show titled Samantha Rastles the Woman Question," performed by Jane Currie, to Loyola University as part of the celebration of Women's History Month.

Nicole Messina joined the Whelan Children's Center as a substitute teacher.

Assistant Professor of Sociology Ed McCaughan presented a paper titled "Homosexuality and National Identity in the Art and Performance of Gay Mexicans" at the American Sociological Association meetings in Washington, D.C., in August.

Kristina Nasi was hired in the Office of Admissions as an admissions counselor.

William A. Neilson, associate professor of law, recently published an article on federal taxation in the Loyola Law Review, Fifth Circuit Symposium. Neilson will speak at the Loyola Annual Estate Planning Conference in December on the topic, "Practical Aspects of Handling Gift and Estate Controversies from Exam through Litigation."

Erin O'Donnell joined the Department of English as an administrative assistant.

Rosary O'Neill, professor of drama and speech, was awarded two fellowshipsto participate in the 31st Annual Squaw Valley Community of Writers Workshops in Nevada and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts residency. In Virginia, O'Neill will be among 20 fellows focusing on creative projects at this working retreat for visual artists, writers, and composers.

Deborah Pennison was hired in the Department of Drama and Speech as an administrative assistant.

Bill Quigley, professor of law and associate dean for academic affairs, presented the keynote address, "Building Community through Renewed Hope," to the 200 attendees at the 10th Annual Louisiana Conference on the Homeless at the Sheraton Hotel in New Orleans in August. Quigley also co-taught a workshop on "Organizing for Social Change," with Barbara Major at the conference.

Associate Professor of Communications Cathy Rogers had an article, "James Gillespie Birney, the Revival Spirit, and The Philanthropist," published in the spring 2000 issue of American Journalism, a refereed journal of media history.

Robert A. Thomas, Loyola Chair in Environmental Communications, delivered the keynote address for the Chevron Conservation Awards, an annual program that recognizes outstanding national service in the field of conservation. The ceremony was held at the Audubon Zoo. Thomas also gave a presentation at the International Association of Business Communicators titled "Environmental Justice: A Very Real Community Issue."

Kim Waggoner was promoted to grants writer in the Division of Institutional Development. Waggoner was previously the senior research analyst in the Advancement Research Office.

Catherine Wessinger, professor of religious studies, presented a paper, "Violent Moments on a Continuum of Millennial Behaviors," at the International Association for the History of Religions meeting in Durban in South Africa.

Debra Woodfork was hired in the Department of Communications as a communications manager.

Jacqueline Williams joined the School of Law as an administrative assistant in the dean's office.

Jennifer Wilson was hired as a processing and records specialist in the Office of Admissions.

Robert Wilson joined the Twomey Center as an offset press operator.

Lori Zawistowski was hired as an associate director in the Office of Admissions.
