BSU sponsored conference gives youth a forum

Black Student Union President, Percy Marchand, A'00, developed the idea for an African-American leadership conference while brainstorming this summer for a positive event to bring the African-American community together. The Black Student Union organized its first leadership conference to provide a forum for students to address problems facing youth today. Loyola hosted this communion of community leaders and students on October 7. The conference provided a forum where speakers, discussion panels, and activities focused on issues relevant to African-Americans.

Forums on affirmative action, community involvement, and career opportunities composed the bulk of the conference events. Keynote speaker and State Representative Cedric Richmond presented ideas on African-American leadership and racism. Marchand says Richmond is the perfect example of a young, positive leader for today's youth.

Such a positive role model was not the only focus of the event. Besides a strong emphasis on leadership, a series of "real world" seminars provided a wealth of information on career opportunities in fields such as business, medicine, politics, education, and entertainment.

Marchand said the conferences help motivate young adults to "get the strength, wisdom, and courage to take a lead in every aspect of life." The event extended to Tulane, Xavier, Dillard, and UNO students to encourage a citywide leadership movement.

During the lunch break, an art and business exposition highlighted community leaders who are making a difference. This allowed students to socialize, exchange ideas, and build relationships with leaders and other students. Afterwards, the BSU treated conference attendees to an entertaining Greek step show. The conference events came to a close with an interfaith service.
