May 12, 2000 Loyola grad is first director of Juilliard jazz studies programVictor Goines, M'84, was named director of the Juilliard jazz studies program by Joseph W. Polisi, president of Juilliard. The saxophonist and clarinetist, who is a member of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and several of Wynton Marsalis' ensembles, has taught at Florida A&M University and the University of New Orleans. Goines completed his undergraduate degree from Loyola's College of Music and earned his master's degree from Virginia Commonwealth University. The Juilliard School, located in Manhattan, is one of the world's most prominent institutions for classical music education. The Juilliard jazz studies program will be the school's first major commitment to jazz in its 94 years. "One thing we will focus on, which comes out of jazz at Lincoln Center's philosophy, is the study of the complete history of the music," Goines says. He adds he would continue performing with the orchestra. "That's very important to up-and-coming musicians. They will be studying everything from be-bop to stride piano and all the rest of the music's history." |
