Boggs Center launches children's book drive

In time for the holidays, the Lindy Boggs National Center for Community Literacy launched a greater New Orleans new and gently used book drive for children living in public housing. The drive began November 10 and runs through December 20, 1999.

New or gently used books for children ages 5 years old and under may be dropped off at any Bank One in Orleans Parish or at the Boggs Center in the Monroe Library. On-line book orders may be delivered to the Boggs Center at Loyola University, 6363 St. Charles Avenue, Box 63, New Orleans, LA 70118.

Books appropriate for children aged 5 years and under may be purchased at a 10-percent discount at the following locations: Maple Street Children's Bookshop, 7529 Maple Street; The Afro-American Bookstop located in the Plaza shopping center and New Orleans Centre; and Beaucoup Books, 5414 Magazine Street and in Uptown Square.

Borders Books and Music, 3131 Veteran's Memorial Blvd., is offering a 20-percent discount on purchases for participating in its Snow Angels program (some restrictions apply). The books will be collected at all the participating stores and brought to the Boggs Center for distribution.

For more information on the book program, or if you are interested in becoming a literacy tutor, contact the Boggs Center at ext. 7012.
