November 12, 1999 Events planned in recognition of Refugee WeekLoyola will host a week of events on policies and customs surrounding the issue of refugees during the week of November 15 - 18, 1999. Leading the discussions is Carl Bankston, Ph.D., assistant professor of sociology at Tulane University. Bankston will lecture on U.S. refugee policy and contemporary refugee crisis on Monday, November 15, at 7 p.m. in Mercy Hall Room 311. U.S. and Caribbean Representative to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Karen Knoning Abuzayd, will lecture on UNHCR and its role in the protection of refugees and the resolution of refugee problems on Tuesday, November 16, at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles Room. A reception follows the discussion. Marshall Burke, Ph.D., and Patrice Reynold, representatives from CARE, will discuss and show slides of their work with Kosovar refugees and victims of Hurricane Mitch in Honduras on Wednesday, November 17, at 7 p.m. in Octavia II. A reception follows. CARE is one of the world's largest international relief and development organizations. A screening of the film Children of Sabra and Shatila and discussion with Nabil Mohamad, national organizing director of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, about his experiences growing up as a refugee in the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon, will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, November 18, in Mercy 311, followed by the opening of the Israeli and Palestinian Political Poster art exhibit at 7:30 p.m. in the Collins C. Diboll Gallery in the Monroe Library. These events are sponsored by the sociology and political science departments and the Loyola University Sociology Student Organization.
