October 8, 1999 Loyola co-sponsors movie premierThursday, October 14, is the national celebration of music educators, students, and the arts community in the nationwide single-day premieres of the movie The Music of the Heart. Simultaneous premieres of this movie will take place in 40 cities across the country. The New Orleans premiere, co-sponsored by Loyola, is scheduled to begin with a reception at The Palace Theatre 20 in Elmwood followed by the movie at 7:30 p.m. The Music of the Heart opens nationwide on October 30. Two-time Academy Award-winner Meryl Streep stars as a music teacher in the Miramax feature film. Aidan Quinn, Gloria Estefan, and Angela Bassett co-star in the true story of a woman who "works in a public school in East Harlem to give kids the hope, pride, and power to make something of themselves with the unlikely tool50 violins." The goals of the nationwide premieres are to raise awareness and support for music education and emphasize the value of music education programs in America's schools. VH1 Save the Music Foundation is working in partnership with The National Coalition for Music Education; The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, Inc.; The Music Educators National Conference; the International Music Products Association in cooperation with the American Music Conference and American String Teachers Association; Loyola University New Orleans; Werlein's for Music; Louisiana Music Educators; and Recording Artists of America in the nationwide celebration. Gwen Hotchkiss, associate professor at Loyola's College of Music, notes Loyola was chosen because "The College of Music at Loyola is outstanding, our music education program has a national reputation.
