October 15, 1999 Women's Studies and Biever Guest Lecture Series offer exciting speakerAs part of its First Monday Brown Bag Lunches, the Women's Studies Committee presents special guest lecturer Joan Tronto, Ph.D., with the Department of Political Science at Hunter College and CUNY Graduate School. "Democracy as a Caring Practice" is the topic of the discussion on Monday, October 18 at 12:30 p.m. in Mercy 103. Later in the evening as part of the Biever Guest Lecture Series, Tronto discusses "What's Wrong with the Work Ethic?" at 7 p.m. in Monroe Hall 157. The Department of Political Science also sponsors this lecture. Tronto is the author of Moral Boundaries and co-editor of Women Transforming Politics. She has also written numerous articles on feminism, the welfare state, and political judgment. She has been a visiting fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna, as well as a visiting professor at Yale University and the University of Humanist Studies in the Netherlands. She has won awards for her teaching and research from Hunter College, the City University of New York, and the Western Political Science Association. An invited speaker at many universities in the United States and Europe, Tronto lectures widely on the ethic of care in contemporary welfare states. For more information, call ext. 3361. |
