Student Leaders recognized at banquet

Arthur Stern, chair of the Administrative Senate and advisor to Gay/ Lesbian Outreach at Loyola, joins students for a delightful evening at the Leadership Banquet.The 17th Annual Student Leadership Recognition Banquet was held Wednesday, April 28, in the St. Charles Room. The banquet was hosted by the Center for Student Leadership Development. Mtumishi St. Julien, L’75, an executive director of the New Orleans Home Mortgage Authority, served as keynote speaker for the event. Over 200 student leaders and organizational advisors attended the banquet. Awards were presented by Vicki L. McNeil, associate vice president for student affairs and chair of the Center for Student Leadership Development, and University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J. Awards presented included: Intramural Sportsmanship, Jeanne Gabrielle and Joe Schott; Intramural Athlete of the Year, Amy Danielson and Ryan Haas; Joseph A. Danna Center Award, Byron Gast; Alumni Association Award, Dustin Burns; Outstanding Greek Awards, Eric Delgado and Mary Jones; Residential Life Award, Robin DeVile; and Mary Ann Reising Flynn Scholarship, Toni Vinterella.

The Spirit of Loyola Awards were established by the Center for Student Leadership Development to recognize broad areas of achievement and leadership which contribute to the quality of life at Loyola. Recipients included The Spirit of Loyola for International Understanding, Washington Gonzalez; Spirit of Loyola for Racial Understanding, Kendrick Johnson; Spirit of Loyola for Outstanding Service as an Organizational Advisor, Caroline Fisher; Spirit of Loyola for Community Service by an Individual, Emili Segovia; Spirit of Loyola for Community Service by an Organization, Black Student Union; Rev. James C. Carter, S.J., Spirit of Loyola for Exceptional Leadership, Joe Schott and Ansel Augustine.

Schott is a senior communications major. He completed Emerging Leaders and has served as a student observer to the Board of Trustees and student representative on the Residential Life Architectural Selection Committee for the new residence hall. Augustine is a senior sociology major. He completed Emerging Leaders and is senior desk assistant for Residential Life. He recently completed a practicum in higher education under the supervision of Residential Life. He has served as orientation leader and peer assistant for New Student Orientation, president and treasurer of Alpha Phi Alpha, and vice president and president of African American Scholars for Youth.
