Loyola Bateman team kicks butts, places fourth

The 1999 Bateman team placed fourth in the Public Relations Student Society Association’s National Bateman competition. The team scored 95 out of 100 points and according to faculty advisor Cathy Rogers, associate professor of communications, “competition was heavy.”

“I’m very proud of them. I’m told we were only one point away from being in the top three.” Members of the team included Lisa Carsley, Liliana Rincon, Mary Beth West, and Ashley White.

This year’s competition was done in association with the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids Kick Butts Day. As part of the campaign, seventh graders at six public schools in Orleans Parish publicly took a stand against tobacco use on April 14. Working with student leaders, members of the Bateman team planned relay races and scavenger hunts with educational themes about tobacco.

The three teams to make their presentation in Washington, D.C., are the University of Florida, University of Georgia, and California State at Long Beach. “All of these schools have programs much bigger than ours,” Rogers says.
