Administrative Senate: A year in review, a look ahead

by Arthur Stern, 1998 99 Administrative Senate Chair Assistant Director of Publications

The 1998 99 academic year marked the first time the Administrative (staff) Senate’s minutes, agendas, by laws, and constitution were available on the Web. Beginning in January 1999, information was linked from the Administration heading on Loyola’s internal home page labeled “Administrative Staff Senate”.

Senate highlights during the past academic year have included a number of guest speakers (detailed below); comprehensive input toward Ongoing Institutional Objective #5: Staff Responsibilities for the Office of the Assistant Provost; preview tours of the new library and residence hall; and a preliminary meeting between the executive committees of the administrative and university (faculty) senates to establish a better relationship in our overall goal of fostering and enhancing university objectives.

Guests at monthly meetings featured, among others, University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J.; new deans Edward Kvet (music) and Frank Scully (arts and sciences); new vice presidents Rhonda Cartwright (financial affairs) and James Eiseman (student affairs); and Vice President for Institutional Advancement Joseph Mansfield who reported on the successful Thresholds capital campaign.

Reports from Acting Dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management Deborah Stieffel, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs David Danahar, Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs Lydia Voigt, former Director of Recreational Sports and Intercollegiate Athletics Craig Bogar, and Director of Parking Services Ray Garofalo rounded out the academic year speaker roster.

Each meeting also featured reports from various senators who also serve on other university committees, including Administrative Senate Elections, Catholic and Jesuit Identity, Fringe Benefits, Parking, Recreational Sports, and the University Planning Team.

Recent senate election results for the 1999 2000 academic year are as follows: Paula Ruiz-Saurage, Gail Howard, and Avia Morgan (representing academic affairs); Debbie Diliberto and Charlotte Harris (representing financial affairs); Catherine Comiskey and Arthur Stern (representing institutional advancement); and Robert Reed, Karen Shields, and Germayne Turner (representing student affairs) will begin or renew two-year terms as senators effective July 1999. Completing the final year of their senate terms are Bill Cahill (academic affairs), Jay Calamia and Dave Huffman (financial affairs), Bob Gross and Jay Sonier (institutional advancement), and Michelle Andrews (student affairs). Officers for the 1999 2000 academic year will be elected at the group’s meeting of July 13.
