April 16, 1999 Catholic Charities USA president headlines May law commencement
The university commencement takes place Sunday, May 16, at 10 a.m., in the Municipal Auditorium. University President Bernard P. Knoth, S.J., will deliver the commencement remarks. His Excellency Archbishop Francis Schulte, D.D., will be in attendance at the ceremony. Enter the auditorium on Basin and Treme streets. Parking will cost $5 at the Municipal Auditorium. Kammer has been head of Catholic Charities since 1992. An attorney, author, and activist, he has a long and impressive history of work on behalf of low-income families and people in need. Prior to this position, he was policy advisor for health and welfare issues in the U.S. Catholic Con-ferences Department of Social Development and World Peace. A native of New Orleans, Kammer served as executive director of Catholic Community Services in Baton Rouge. In 1991, Kammer wrote his first book, Doing Faithjustice: An Introduction to Catholic Social Thought. He followed with a second, Salted With Fire, in 1994. Kammer is a former visiting scholar at Woodstock Theological Center at Georgetown University, and he was the founding chair of the Jesuit Volunteer Corps. He received a bachelor of arts from Spring Hill College in Mobile, a juris doctor from Yale University, and a masters in divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Loyola University of Chicago. Activities set to honor graduatesThe Baccalaureate Mass for the School of Law is scheduled for Thursday, May 13, at 10 a.m., in the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. A reception hosted by the Law Alumni Association follows at 11:30 in the St. Charles Room. The Baccalaureate Mass for the College of Business Administration, City College, and the College of Music begins at 10 a.m., on Friday, May 14, in the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. The College of Arts and Sciences holds its Baccalaureate Mass at 2 p.m. A reception for all of the colleges will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the St. Charles Room. Faculty and staff encouraged to attend ceremoniesFor the Baccalaureate Masses, participating faculty and staff, dressed in academic attire, should assemble in the first-floor lobby of Marquette Hall 30 minutes before the Mass in order to line up for the processional to the church. The procession will follow the candidates for graduation. Loyola community members participating in the School of Law commencement should meet in the Coker Room/Brass Club Room on the second floor of the Municipal Auditorium no later than 9 a.m. on Saturday morning. Here, you will robe in academic attire and assemble in the proper order for the ceremonial procession. Faculty and staff participating in the University Commencement also should meet in the Coker Room/Brass Club Room on the second floor no later than 8:45 a.m. on Sunday morning. Here, you will robe in academic attire for the procession. The processional line will begin moving at 9:45 a.m. so the ceremony can began promptly at 10 a.m. University marshals will be on hand to direct the procession. Please let the Office of Public Affairs know of your plans to participate in the ceremony by returning the card mailed to you last month by April 30. All members of the Loyola community are encouraged to attend this special weekend. |
