November 6, 1998 BSU to host awards ceremonyThe Black Student Union (BSU) will recognize Loyola faculty, staff, alumni, and friends from the surrounding community, as well as award merit scholarships to current Loyola students, on Saturday, November 21, 1998, at 7 p.m. in the St. Charles Room. The Scholarship and Awards Gala is an annual event given by African-Americans for African-Americans who have made outstanding achievements within their fields. Councilman Troy Carter is the host of this years ceremony, titled "An Evening of Scholarship and Thanksgiving." Junior Torey Lawson is the chair. Four prestigious awards will be presented at the gala to outstanding graduates and community servants: the Black Student Union Outstanding Achievement Award, Louis Westerfield Law Alumnus Award, the Dr. Anthony Recasner Outstanding Community Award, and the Dr. Norman Roussell Commitment for Excellence Award. Tickets for the gala are $25 per person, $35 per couple, and $5 for Loyola students with current IDs. Guests may purchase individual tickets or a table. Hors doeuvres and drinks will be served. Donations will be accepted. The BSU was founded to provide an enriching and educational program from a black perspective and increase the understanding of the black culture and its significant contributions to society and history. The BSU executive board for the 1998?99 school year is Delesslyn Kennebrew, president; Chris Dupree, vice president; Elena Anderson, secretary; Kewana Foster, treasurer; and Audrie Lawton, parliamentarian.
