Making a Splash

Irina Costache, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history, is doing some revolutionary things these days. She has initiated and coordinated a first-of-its-kind “virtual” slide library on the Internet. The web site, Art Resources Through Internet Surfing (A.R.T.I.S.), provides an index of art images available on the World Wide Web. The site offers links according to genres, including architecture, graphic arts and design, mixed media, painting, photography, and sculpture.

Future links include electronic art, performance art, and video art. If you want to find a painting by Matisse, click on the painting link, then click on Matisse, and you would find many works. Currently, A.R.T.I.S. lists 20th- and late 19th-century artists but Costache plans to expand its database in the future.
