October 23, 1998 New summer program offered for international Fulbright scholarsThis summer the Loyola Intensive English Program (LIEP) and International Student Affairs (ISA) hosted 24 Fulbright scholars in a pre-graduate program of language instruction, cross-cultural training, and graduate school orientation. The participants, specializing in varied disciplines such as speech pathology, social science, and film studies, represented 17 countries from all parts of the world. The program, co-directed by Debbie Danna and Ruth Harmon, was the result of a grant awarded to LEIP and ISA by the Institute of International Education. The course of studies included Paulette Swartzfagers academic writing class, Erika Heppners oral communication class, and a U.S. culture course which included lectures by Anthony Ladd, Phil Dynia, Larry Lorenz, John Holdridge, Susanne Dietzel, and Justin Levitov. Doreen Simonsen and Deborah Poole ran an Internet research class, and Wing Fok, together with graduate assistants from Loyola and Tulane, ran academic development seminars. Due to the excellence of the academic courses and the variety of cultural activities, Loyola will most likely be awarded the program again next year. LEIP and ISA wish to express their appreciation to the Loyola faculty and staff involved in the program. |
