September 4, 1998 Library presents LUCI webOn Tuesday, September 8th at 12:30 p.m., the main library will host a ribbon cutting for its new integrated library system. The new system, which was developed by the SIRSI corporation, introduces many wonderful new features to the Loyola community. The librarys catalog, now known as LUCIweb, is available via the World Wide Web, a much easier method of access than the text-based telnet access that library users have experienced in the past. LUCIwebs graphic format makes it easy-to-use and much easier to view on the screen. Hypertext links within catalog records now allow users to navigate the catalog with the click of a mouse button. Call number links let library users browse the shelves virtually. Users may also perform complex searches, limiting by types of materials (such as video, compact disc, or score), location in the library, publication year, and more. Search results may be printed, downloaded, or e-mailed. All library functions (including ordering, receiving, circulation, cataloging, serials check-in, etc.) now are integrated into one computer system, allowing much easier access to this behind-the-scenes information than in the past. For example, library materials that are on order or are awaiting cataloging now display in the catalog. LUCIweb also allows library users to complete some circulation transactions without actually having to visit the library or even pick up the phone. With a system PIN (Personal Identification Number), library users may review the list of items they have checked out and place holds on materials that are checked out to someone else. If you would like to learn more about using LUCIweb, stop by the Reference Desk in the library and ask the librarian for a test drive or take a LUCIweb workshop. LUCIweb workshops will be offered in Miller 218 unless otherwise noted.
To register, call ext. 3354 and leave a message, or e-mail you name, phone number, and the workshop you wish to attend to: register@loyno.edu or fill out a registration form in the main library. Librarians Laurie Gibson and Trish Del Nero |
