September 25, 1998 Journalist presents multimedia eventPhiladelphia journalist Allen Houghland presents Mumia Abu-Jamal: A Prisoner on Death Row, a multimedia presentation on October 6, 1998, at 7:30 p.m. in Nunemaker Hall. Mumia Abu-Jamal was sentenced to death in June of 1995 for the shooting death of a Philadelphia policeman. He says he was framed and has appealed the decision stating he did not receive a fair trial. He was granted an indefinite stay of execution a few days before his scheduled date of execution in August 1995. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court will rule on Abu-Jamals appeal some time this year. Its decision will either give Mumia Abu-Jamal a new trial or a new execution date. Houghland has written extensively about Mumia Abu-Jamal and his belief that Abu-Jamal did not receive a fair trial. In early 1995, Houghland interviewed Abu-Jamal at the Pennsylvanias super maximum SCI Greene Prison. Houghland brings the context of that interview and the issues the case raises through a multimedia presentation, including Abu-Jamals discussion of the FBI, the death penalty, race, society, and the law. The event is free and open to the public. Call the University Programming Board at ext. 2131. Legia Coyi, Intern in the Office of Public Affairs |
