Visual Arts 1998 European tour program in Italy
May 27 to June 30, 1998
5 weeks/7 Loyola credits/cost $3,625
(includes air and ground transportation, room and board, two daily meals)
On Thursday, February 26, Professor Mark Grote, chair
of Loyolas visual arts department, will present a one-hour talk
with slides and other information on the universitys European tour
program in Italy. The lecture will be held in St. Marys Hall, 7224
Dominican Street, on the Broadway campus.
Professor Ralph Adamo of the English department will accompany Grote
on the study trip.
The art history, drawing, or English courses are based in the medieval
city of Gubbio in the district of Umbria. All students will visit major
cities in the Tuscany/Umbrian area, such as Perugia, Arezzo, Siena, and
Florence. During the fifth week of the program, participants will visit
Rome as well as other historical cities and architectural sites.
Students will be housed at a safe and comfortable hotel located within
easy walking distance of Gubbios city center. Breakfast and the
evening meal will be served in the hotel. Transatlantic and ground transportation
are included.
The following courses will be available to all participants. University
admission is not required.
VISA G465 Drawing in Italy
Students will create at least 15 large drawings using various materials.
Classes will meet MondayFriday from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Students
may return to the studio after class. An exhibition of the drawings
will be held at the end of the program.
VISA G455 European Tour
The objective of this course is to offer students art history in Italy.
Students will be required to write and present an on-site report (topic
to be selected by the instructor). A term paper of at least 3,000 words
will be required after returning to the United States.
ENGL G294 Literary Movements/Great Poets of the 20th Century
Students will both read and write poetry in this course, which will
be part lecture/discussion and part writing workshop. The course may
be taken by Loyola English majors for either literature or writing credit.
