November 7, 1997 High comedy second fall production of Loyola theatre seasonA high comedy, full of romance and wit, will be this season's second production offered by the Loyola's Department of Drama and Speech. The Rivals by Richard Brinsley Sheridan will run November 7-16 in Marquette Theater. It will be directed by the Rev. Ernest Ferlita, S.J. Written in 1775, this play has endured as a favorite of audiences since its first production. The story is filled with intrigue, romantic rivalry, and eccentric characters. "Several of the characters in The Rivals are familiar figures, particularly Mrs. Malaprop. Though she thinks herself 'queen of the dictionary,' she misuses the English language in a very comic fashion," Ferlita said. While the writing gently pokes fun at the pretensions of 18th century English society, this production is being staged with full period costumes, reflecting the exaggerated styles and manners of that society. "Visually, The Rivals will be a treat for the eyes," said Georgia Gresham, chair of the department, "and the play is an examination of society's hypocrisy. That particular theme is never out of date." The Rivals will run November 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m. and November 9 and 16 at 3 p.m. in Marquette Theater. Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for students, seniors, and Loyola faculty. Group discounts are available. For more information, contact the Department of Drama and Speech at 865-3824. |
