November 14, 1997 Storytelling fundraiser benefits the Twomey CenterStorytelling is no longer just for kids; it's an event for the whole universe. On November 22, thousands of people around the world will gather for a night of storytelling for TELLABRATION! This year, the New Orleans Storytelling Guild, in arrangement with the National Storytelling Association, will host the local event, donating proceeds to ERACE and Loyola's Twomey Center. TELLABRATION! originated nine years ago as a means of building community support for the ancient art of storytelling. In 1996, people in over 350 sites around the continent and eight foreign countries participated in the event. On November 22, listeners will hear many types of stories, including humorous tales, folklore, stories that touch the heart, and many more. The Twomey Center for Peace through Justice seeks to achieve social justice through education so that individuals may take action to eliminate social problems. Twomey Center Director Theodore Quant expressed his appreciation, "I am very grateful to the New Orleans Storytelling Guild for preserving the rich heritage of storytelling in New Orleans and for sponsoring events like Tellabration to showcase the wonderful storytellers in our community. I am especially grateful that they have chosen the Twomey Center and ERACE to be recipients of the contributions raised from the event." The event is scheduled for Saturday, November 22, at 8 p.m. at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of New Orleans at Jefferson and Claiborne avenues. Tickets are $5 and may be purchased at the Maple Street Bookstore, Maple Street Children's bookstore, and the Children's Hour Emporium on Magazine Street. Tickets also will be available at the door for $7. For more information, contact Patty Carbajal, TELLABRATION! producer, at 482-3023. Hilarie Eldridge, Intern in the Office of Public Affairs |
