Arts and Sciences, Music dean search progressing

A national search for the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences isunderway. A search committee, chaired by Professor Kenneth Messa,has been formed. Other committee members include Humanities/Art: professors Maurice Brungardt, Phanuel Egejuru, and James Gaffney; Behavioral/Social Sciences, professors Marcia Abide and A.L. Lorenz; Natural Sciences: professors Frank Jordan and Kenneth Messa; Administration: Business Dean J. Patrick O'Brien; and Students: Maria Hebert and Rachael Milam. On October 17, the committee held its first organizational meeting.

An official position announcement has been prepared and will appear in The Chronicle of Higher Education as well as other appropriate publications.

The preferred starting date for the new dean will be July 1, 1998. Current dean Robert Rowland will step down at the end of the spring 1998 semester.

The search committee for the dean of the College of Music has been busy since forming last semester. Potential candidates for the position had until November 7 to submit applications. The committee, led by Mary Sue Morrow, associate professor of music, soon will begin reviewing the applications and narrowing the field of candidates.
