Crescent City Farmers Market celebrates the yam

If store-bought vegetables aren't good enough to complete the perfect feast, visit the Crescent City Farmers Market for its Thanksgiving Yamboree to obtain the best in homegrown produce. On Saturday, November 22, from 8 a.m. to noon, rain or shine, the market will provide fun and food for the entire family. The Crescent City Farmers Market, co-sponosred by Loyola's Twomey Center, is located at 700 Magazine Street, corner of Girod.

Beginning at 8 a.m., Dikki Du and the Zydeco Crew, from Lawtell, La., will kick off the celebration with a lively, musical backdrop to spice up the morning activities.

At 9:30, Cindy Renteria and Patty Carbajal of the New Orleans Storytelling Guild will entertain children of all ages with a variety of stories, including, "The Enormous Yam."

Following at 10 a.m. will be a cooking demonstration, filled with lots of creative ideas and tips for Thanksgiving, by chef Susan Spicer of Bayona Restaurant and the new Spice, Inc.

Throughout the morning, the Louisiana Children's Museum will provide activities for the kids, including a yam stamping. Meanwhile, shoppers can select produce from the best of the Louisiana autumn harvest. From fresh yams, to broccoli, to strawberry wine, just about everything can be found at the Yamboree.

All events are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Richard McCarthy at ext. 5898.
