October 3, 1997 Regional premier opens Loyola's 1997-98 theatre seasonA regional premiere by one of the most innovative new voices in the theatre will open the 1997-98 season of the Loyola Department of Drama and Speech. The Land of Cockaigne by David Ives, will run October 3-12 in the Lower Depths Theatre. It is directed by Don Brady, Ph.D., professor of drama and speech. "This play takes an intriguing and comic look at a familiar type of scene," said Brady. "It's a modern fable of a typical American family at a picnic. As one scene becomes retold from different points of view, our curiosity is aroused. Finally, the play leads us to question our own perception of what is time, in a very interesting manner." The title refers to a mythical land of plenty. Ives has written several recent hits in New York, including All in the Timing. His writing style and perspective is unique-sort of a cross between 'Saturday Night Live' and social concern." "We're fortunate to be able to present this very recent work," added Georgia Gresham, chair of the Department of Drama and Speech. "This is exactly the kind of fresh new playwriting that our department likes to explore." Serving as a curtain raiser for The Land of Cockaigne will be Sure Thing, a short fast-paced and extremely witty play, also by Ives. The Land of Cockaigne and Sure Thing will run October 3, 4, 9, 10, and 11 at 8 p.m. and October 5 and 12 at 3 p.m., in the Lower Depths Theatre, Music/Communication Complex. Tickets are $8 general admission, $6 for students, seniors and Loyola faculty. Group discounts are available. For more information, call ext. 3840. |
