Loyola Presents These Shining Lives

Loyola press release - September 13, 2018

Loyola University New Orleans Opens 2018-2019 Theatre Season with Dramatic Tribute to Feminist Victory, Personal Resilience

In the upcoming performances of These Shining Lives, Loyola University New Orleans Theatre pays tribute to the real-life circumstances of the “radium girls.” Based on their true story, the social drama depicts the tragedy of four women working in a watch factory that conceals from them the hazards of working with radium.

The production dramatizes workplace hazards in 1920s Illinois and explores the political nuances of female emergence in the workforce within the timeless context of employee rights in the face of corporate greed. These Shining Lives tells the story of a feminist victory when the women take their fight for justice to the Supreme Court.

These Shining Lives depicts the enthusiasm and spirit with which these women initially went to work; the friendships, independence, and empowerment they garnered; and the important contributions they made to their families’ betterment. This fable-like story of the American dream then turns to the mysterious illnesses that began to plague the workers, their catastrophic outcomes, and the landmark legal case that—after years of corporate obstruction, lengthy appeals, and terrible suffering—paved the way for the passage of occupational labor laws.

Written by Melanie Marnich, These Shining Lives offers an intimate, often funny, and always compelling look at some brave American women who bonded, enriched their families and communities through meaningful work, and united in the face of adversity to make courageous choices for the greater good.

Loyola’s performances of These Shining Lives will be helmed by Loyola theatre alum, Kristi Jacobs-Stanley, chair of the fine arts department at Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans. This play opens the Loyola University New Orleans 2018-19 theatre season as the first of four shows.

Performances at Loyola begin with a preview performance on Thursday, September 21, 2018 and will be held in the university’s Lower Depths Theatre located in the Communication/Music Complex at the corner of Calhoun Street and St. Charles Avenue. Accessible seating is available.

“We are thrilled to have Kristi come home to Loyola to direct this beautiful play with our students. It is always a pleasure to get to work with our alumni and have them share their professional experiences and talents with our current students," said Dr. Laura Hope, director of Loyola Theatre.

“I find this play profoundly hopeful and encouraging, because it shows what a small group of determined women can do when they band together, regardless of the seeming impossibility of the task. The radium girls had every reason to give up their quest for social justice, but they pressed on and achieved results that still benefit working people in this country today. I hope their story will inspire a new generation -- and, in fact, all of us -- to work together for the greater good.”

Tickets are $12 for general admission or $10 for students, seniors, and Loyola faculty and staff. Group rates are available. Free parking is available in the university’s West Road garage.
