Loyola University New Orleans Receives $250K from the Donum Dei Foundation

Loyola press release - May 30, 2018

Generous gift will unlock a $250,000 matching gift from an anonymous donor and help to build a new chapel

Loyola University New Orleans has received a generous contribution of $250,000 from the Donum Dei Foundation to support building a new Chapel of St. Ignatius in the future Tom Benson Jesuit Center on campus. This gift from the Donum Dei Foundation, which provides grants to support Catholic causes, will unlock an additional $250,000 matching gift from an anonymous donor.

“For many years, it has been the dream of Loyola’s leadership and the wider community to build the university’s first-ever freestanding chapel dedicated specifically to the needs of students and the broader campus community. The new Chapel of St. Ignatius, part of the Tom Benson Jesuit Center, is designed to be an iconic structure and a symbol of our Catholic Jesuit mission in the center of our campus,” said the Rev. Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., university president.

Dr. Chris Wiseman, vice president of institutional advancement, added: “We now need fewer than 30 additional gifts of any size to the chapel to unlock another $250,000 anonymous gift. We are working to achieve that and to break ground soon.”

The fundraising effort to raise money for construction of the chapel has been among the most successful efforts in Loyola’s history. Fr. Wildes is in talks with additional benefactors who could push that total higher.

Situated in the heart of campus, the Chapel of St. Ignatius and the Tom Benson Jesuit Center will be living symbols of the university’s mission and identity and will allow the Loyola community a space intentionally constructed for Mass, rest, and reflection.

Fundraising for the chapel is part of Loyola’s ongoing Faith in the Future campaign, which recently has surpassed $87.2 million on the way to the $100 million goal. Following six record-setting years, the Faith in the Future campaign is the most ambitious and successful fundraising campaign in university history. Give here.
