Loyola press release - January 23, 2018

“America’s a capella pride and joy” brings their orchestra of voices to Loyola for one night only!

This spring, Loyola Presents Chanticleer, the Grammy Award-winning ensemble The New Yorker called “the world’s reigning male chorus.” Chanticleer will perform March 19 at Holy Name of Jesus Church for their first-ever concert in New Orleans. The event is a part of Chanticleer’s 40th anniversary tour, which will include in 51concerts in 21 of the United States and eight European countries.

The group is world-renowned as “an orchestra of voices” that seamlessly blends 12 male voices ranging from tenor to bass and performs original interpretations of vocal literature, from Renaissance to jazz to pop. Aside from their concert, Chanticleer will host a workshop and masterclass with the Loyola Chamber Singers on March 19. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Loyola students to learn from and work one-on-one with these world class musicians.

“I’m beyond thrilled that Chanticleer will visit Loyola University New Orleans this spring and not onlyp perform in this historic and beautiful Holy Name church, but work side by side with our vocal and music students,” said Rita O. Huntsinger Distinguished Professor of Music Dr. Meg Frazier, director of Loyola University of New Orleans’ School of Music and director of choral activities at Loyola. “Chanticleer is the world’s best-known male vocal ensemble, and our students are extremely fortunate to be able to learn from them as they share vocal techniques and professional guidance.”

Since Chanticleer began releasing recordings in 1981, the group has sold over one million albums and won two Grammys. The a capella ensemble was founded in 1978 by tenor Louis A. Botto, who sang with the ensemble until 1989 and served as artistic director until his death in 1997. The group takes its name from the “clear-singing” roster in Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Chanticleer was named Ensemble of the Year by Musical America in 2008 and inducted into the American Classical Music Hall of Fame the same year.
