Loyola University New Orleans and New Orleans Friends of Music Present the Harlem Quartet

Loyola press release - March 9, 2017

The jive of jazz meets the sweet sounds of classical music as the internationally acclaimed Harlem Quartet performs next month at Loyola University New Orleans, as part of Loyola’s distinguished Montage Performing Art Series.

The performance will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, April 7, 2017 at the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall at Loyola, 6363 St. Charles Ave. Tickets are $18 for young New Orleanians (age 35 and younger) and $35 dollars for adults. Students will be admitted free with their IDs. To purchase tickets, click here. Free parking is available in the West Road Garage, accessible from St. Charles Avenue.

The Harlem Quartet performance will follow the “Winners Showcase Concert,” which spotlights winning chamber groups from New Orleans’ own chamber music competition, NOLA Chamber Fest, and begins at 6:30 p.m. in Roussel Hall. Tickets will admit attendees for both the Winners Showcase Concert and Harlem Quartet concert.

The Harlem Quartet will be in town for a four-day residency in collaboration with the Loyola University New Orleans College of Music and Fine Arts, the Greater New Orleans Youth Orchestras, and the Louisiana Children’s Museum.

The Harlem Quartet will lead a master class at Loyola at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 8 in Nunemaker Auditorium, located in Monroe Hall at Loyola. The class is free and open to the public.

The Harlem Quartet will also perform at the Louisiana Children’s Museum at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 9. The concert is free with museum admission, which is $8.50. For more information, visit www.friendsofmusic.org or www.nolachamberfest.org.

Sharing their passion for music to diverse audiences across the globe has led the Harlem Quartet to perform for former U.S. President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House and has led to a highly successful tour of South Africa.

The celebrated string ensemble has performed with a range of notable performers including: Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, Carter Brey, Fred Sherry, Misha Dicter, Jeremy Denk, and Paquito D’Rivera. Their recording, Hot House, created with jazz master Chick Corea and percussionist Gary Burton, was a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winner. Harlem Quartet appears by arrangement with Sciolino Artist Management.

“The Harlem Quartet brings to New Orleans the beauty of classical music and the excitement of jazz, all in one great concert,” said Margaret E. Shields, education chair of New Orleans Friends of Music. “Their work with young people will expose students across our city to new music and further deepen their musical passions.”
