High school students from around the nation converge at Loyola for 2017 Invitational Band Festival
Loyola University New Orleans welcomes the musically diverse and internationally acclaimed Boston Brass for three whirlwind days of concerts and masterclasses, culminating in a special performance capping off the 2017 Loyola Invitational Band Festival. All events will be held on main campus at 6363 St. Charles Ave.
Boston Brass will be joining Loyola for a 3-day residency that runs from Thursday, March 30 through Saturday, April 1, 2017. During the 3 days, the brass quintet will give a variety of lectures to Loyola music students on topics such as music business, chamber music, and recording.
On Friday, March 31 from 4:30-7:30 p.m., Loyola will host the Loyola Brass Festival featuring Boston Brass and the Loyola University Brass Faculty. The festival will feature multiple masterclasses addressing foundational brass techniques and performance skills and is open to brass players of all ages and levels. Beginning the morning of Saturday, April 1, the Loyola Band Invitational Festival brings talented high school bands from around the nation to Loyola to build skills alongside professionals. The festival creates a supportive and educational environment for eager music students aiming to hone their craft. Each high school band will perform a concert and receive a masterclass from members of Boston Brass. All high school concerts and masterclasses are free and open to the public. The festival will conclude with a ticketed concert by Boston Brass and the Loyola University Wind Ensemble at 4 p.m. in the university’s Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall.
Boston Brass has established a one-of-a-kind musical experience enjoyed by students and audiences for more than 30 years. Bringing their unique sound to a diverse range of music from classical arrangements to burning jazz standards, Boston Brass has been featured on The CBS Early Show, on National Public Radio’s Performance Today, and by other key media outlets. The band has performed at The Great American Brass Band Festival and recorded several mesmerizing albums.
“The annual Invitational Band Festival at Loyola allows talented music students from around the nation to join us at Loyola for skill-building in a supportive environment and a spectacular showcase of musical talent among colleagues and peers,” said Serena Weren, director of bands and assistant professor of music at Loyola University New Orleans. “Masterclasses led by Loyola faculty and Boston Brass will help the musicians attending the 2017 Invitational Band Festival and Brass Festival to improve their performance skills and continue to grow as musicians. Working with Boston Brass is both a tremendous learning opportunity and a joy for the Loyola Wind Ensemble and the broader musical community.”
Ticket prices for the Boston Brass concert at the Loyola Band Invitational Festival concert are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors, students with ID, and Loyola Faculty/Staff. Free parking is available in the West Road parking garage, accessible from St. Charles Avenue.
