Loyola Presents: Designer Erik Winkowski

Loyola press release - October 31, 2017

New Orleans-based animator and designer Erik Winkowski will visit Loyola University New Orleans to hold a free design forum called “How to Find Your Artistic Voice in One Hour” on Wednesday, November 8 at 5:30 p.m. The design forum is part of Loyola Presents, formerly known as the Montage Fine and Performing Arts Series, which showcases some of the top arts events in the region.

“We love hosting designers and creators in the Loyno Presents lecture series because it’s a great resource for our creative community within the university and throughout the city,” said Daniela Marx, chair of the design department at Loyola, which offers the only undergraduate degree design program in the greater New Orleans area. “Seeing work from other disciplines can be an inspiration; it can be a starting point for collaboration between artists, or it can be a true crossroads where students start to understand more about themselves and what they want to do with their art.”

Winkowski is an animator and designer based in New Orleans. He grew up in New York City and graduated from Cooper Union where he received the A. Lowe Award for Excellence, and has been featured in Wallpaper* Magazine’s highly selective Graduate Directory. He has done work for such clients as: The New Yorker, IFC, Sony Music, A&E, Harper Collins, Jockey, NYU Press, The Ford Foundation, GOOD Magazine, and many more.

"I’m inspired every time I go to a lecture,” said Marx, a designer. “Seeing others talk about what they’re working on inspires me in my own work. When I see an animator like Erik it makes me wish that I made more animations and respect that artistic world even more because you see the time and effort that goes into it.”

Winkowski’s forum is the second of three design-specific events in the Loyola Presents 2017-18 campaign. The design series kicked off October 25 with a talk by local illustrator Maggie Covert LeBlanc.

“We hope that the lecture series helps students take what they’re learning in the classroom and go beyond the theory,” Marx said. “Seeing what they’re learning put into practice helps transition their minds from student to professional and can help them connect what they’re doing now to a future career.”

Loyola Presents: Erik Winkowski will take place a 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 8, 2017 at in Nunemaker Auditorium, Third Floor, Monroe Hall, Loyola University New Orleans, 6363 St. Charles Ave. This event is free and open to the public.
