Loyola press release - January 27, 2017

Get your tickets now! Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band return next month to Loyola University New Orleans, to perform with the Loyola Symphony Orchestra. The collaborative concert marks the first time that the famed jazz ensemble has played alongside a symphony orchestra.

The concert will take place at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, 2017, at the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall at Loyola University New Orleans, 6363 St. Charles Ave. The two groups come together under the direction of Associate Professor of Music and Director of Orchestras Dr. Jean Montes.

Brian Blade, a former student of Loyola’s acclaimed School of Music, formed The Fellowship Band in 1997 almost a decade after meeting Jon Cowherd ‘90 and being inspired by Cowherd’s composing and friendship. The two met while attending Loyola and have since released four albums, including: Brian Blade Fellowship, in 1998, Perceptual, in 2000, Season of Changes, in 2008, and Landmarks, in 2014.

“This return to the New Orleans and to Loyola University is a reaffirmation and acknowledgment of where we come from and what has and will grow from these roots and new relationships,” said Blade. “As a top jazz ensemble that grew out of the unifying connection with Loyola School of Music and New Orleans, we are honored to come back and create this one-of-a-kind collaboration and embrace the theme of Becoming One.”

The Loyola Symphony Orchestra will feature 60 musicians with percussion, brass, woodwind and string sections. The Fellowship Band features Jon Cowherd playing piano, Chris Thomas on bass, Melvin Butler on tenor and soprano saxophone, Myron Walden playing alto saxophone and bass clarinet, and Brian Blade playing drums. The artists hope to record these premiere performances of compositions and orchestral arrangements by Blade and Cowherd, as well as arrangements by John Mahoney, a former professor of Jazz Studies who taught both men at Loyola early in their careers.

Tickets for the event are $40 for preferred seating, $25 general admission, $10 seniors (ages 65+), free for Loyola students, high school students, faculty, and staff with ID.
