Philip Michael Kane: 2016 Ignatian Award for Outstanding Senior Man

Loyola announcement - May 20, 2016

Philip Kane graduates from Loyola University New Orleans with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English writing. He completed a successful semester of student teaching at De La Salle High School and will receive his teaching certification in secondary English education.

In addition to his positive academic record, Philip has been involved on campus and in the greater New Orleans community in many ways. At Loyola, he served on the Residence Hall Council, as an Admissions Student Ambassador, Student Government Association Senator for the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences, Awakening Retreat participant and staff member, First Year Retreat participant and leader, Spark Orientation Service Week mentor, Loyola University Community Action Program volunteer, and member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity. He also served as a volunteer with the Freret Street Initiative and worked as a summer camp counselor at both the Isidore Newman School and National World War II Museum.

Of particular importance to Philip’s experience during his time at Loyola has been serving as an Ignacio Volunteer in Kingston, Jamaica and a semester studying abroad at the University of Amsterdam.

“My experience at Loyola has instilled in me a feeling of moral responsibility and obligation illuminating my purpose of improving on, and correcting, the accessibility and versatility of the educational system, both at the secondary and post-secondary levels. This goal, while broad and idealistic, has permeated every aspect of my formation, calling me towards an overall search for justice for the oppressed through the independence and self-assuredness that education can afford,” Philip writes.

After graduation, Philip will begin work on a master’s degree in education through the University of Portland, Oregon. Accepted into the Pacific Alliance for Catholic Education (PACE) Program, he has been assigned to teach world literature and American literature at Maryknoll School in Honolulu, Hawaii for two years.
