Loyola University New Orleans Biever Guest Lecture and Montage Theatre and Fine Arts Series Present Sanford Hinderlie, Tom Van Der Geld in Concert

Evening of jazz will spotlight internationally known vibraphonist and composer Thomas van der Geld and Sanford Hinderlie, acclaimed jazz pianist and Loyola professor of music

Loyola University New Orleans presents an evening of jazz with internationally known vibraphonist and composer Dr. Thomas van der Geld performing with Sanford Hinderlie, acclaimed jazz pianist and Loyola professor of music. Van der Geld is legendary for his solo work and group recordings for the German label ECM/JAPO. Hinderlie has performed throughout the world, including concerts in the Far East, the Soviet Union, the Republics of Georgia and Armenia, the Middle East, Europe and throughout the United States.

Together van der Geld and Hinderlie will perform a unique jazz concert at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 in Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall at Loyola’s main campus, 6363 St. Charles Ave. The event, which is supported by Loyola’s Biever Guest Lecture Series and Montage Theatre and Fine Arts Series is free and open to the public. Free parking is also available in the West Road Parking Garage.

“We are always seeking opportunities to expose our students, faculty and staff to new ideas, new sounds, new techniques and new ways of thinking about music,” said Anthony Decuir, interim dean of Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts. “Bringing international talent to Loyola to work and perform side by side with our talented faculty and students is a blessing for not only the campus community, but the greater New Orleans community.”

Thomas van der Geld is a Boston-born American vibraphonist who has lived permanently in Europe since 1974. He has performed at nearly all of the significant European Jazz Festivals including Montreux, Weltmusiktage Donaueschingen, Baden-Baden New Jazz Meeting, Willisau Festival, Jazz Festival Berlin and the Leverkusener Jazz Festival.

He has performed and collaborated on productions with important jazz musicians including Kenny Wheeler, John Taylor, Charlie Mariano, Manfred Schoof, Luis de Mateo, Eduard Vesala, Barre Philips, Albert Mangelsdorf, Keith Copeland, Mel Lewis, Bob Brookmeyer, Peter Herbolzheimer and Bill Connors.

His legendary group Children at Play has recorded four albums for the German label ECM / JAPO, namely: Children at Play, Path, Patience and Out Patience. In addition to composing for his own small groups, van der Geld has written commissioned numerous works for stage and film.

Sanford Hinderlie, a professor of music at Loyola University New Orleans, works with students in the university’s acclaimed Department of Film and Music Industry Studies, which aims to prepare students for entrepreneurial success in creative professions. Hinderlie teaches contemporary music and serves as director of the university’s brand-new Popular and Commercial Music program in Loyola’s College of Music and Fine Arts.

He built the first recording studio at Loyola in the 80s and has been responsible for the building of technology labs in the College of Music and Fine Arts. A composer and performer of electronic music, Hinderlie has written compositions that have been heard throughout the United States. He is currently also busy as a composer for television, radio, and films, including a feature-length movie Cut Up and AAA travel videos.

Hinderlie has composed the music for past New Orleans Big Easy Awards programs. He performs as a jazz and commercial pianist in New Orleans. His latest recording of jazz piano, Hinderlie Plays Hinderlie features all original compositions. An earlier CD, Solo Flight, includes several jazz standards. Launched in August under Hinderlie’s direction, Loyola’s brand-new Popular and Commercial Music bachelor’s degree program, is one of the top three most popular majors among first-year students. The program places primary emphasis on musical ability and live performance. Students in the program are required to take courses in music industry studies, music technology, business and theory, as well as band/ensemble classes and private music lessons.

Quickly becoming known on campus as “The School of Rock,” the Popular and Commercial Music program demands that prospective students audition for admission, be proficient on an instrument, and participate in a student ensemble.

“What finer place than New Orleans to have this new program. The city is a recruiting tool,” Hinderlie said. “Students have the opportunity to perform ― and perform frequently ― in New Orleans because we have such a vibrant live music scene and rich heritage.”
