Loyola Named Top 'Hidden Gem' College

Loyola press release - June 1, 2015

Loyola University New Orleans is known for its exceptional academic and culturally diverse experience, but now it has a new accolade for prospective students to consider – “hidden gem.” College matching platform, College Raptor Inc., named Loyola University the top “hidden gem” for the state of Louisiana in an announcement published last week.

The distinction is defined as high-caliber colleges and universities which receive fewer than 5,000 applicants per year but have a total enrollment of greater than 1,000. Other universities joining Loyola on the list include Wellesley College, Regis University and the University of New England.

“Today, high school students and their families rely heavily on web-based tools to help them identify colleges to include in their selection set of places to explore and submit an application,” said Roberta Kaskel, vice president of enrollment management at Loyola. “We are delighted that College Raptor recognizes what we know to be true about Loyola – that we truly are special in the education, experience and value we provide our students.”

The top hidden gem in each state was determined by analyzing colleges based on their enrollment and application data submitted to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS).

Each institution also received an “Overall Ranking” of quality based on academic and outcome data, including graduation rate, selectivity, student-to-faculty ratio and other factors. Loyola University was one of 49 institutions recognized across the country. One college was named from each state, with the exception of Alaska, which did not have an institution meeting the criteria for recognition.

“Releasing the hidden gem list now is great for all 49 colleges that made the list. Summer is the perfect time for the incoming class of high school students across the country to vet and visit colleges that interest them,” Kaskel said. “We certainly are ready to welcome our guests and look forward to demonstrating to them all that we have to offer.”

The “hidden gem” status provides an opportunity to shine a light on colleges and universities that provide both academic rigor and student success. College Raptor will announce hidden gems at the national and regional level in the coming months, said Olivia Pittman, spokeswoman for College Raptor.
