Loyola hosts music education conference next month

Loyola press release - May 15, 2015

Loyola University New Orleans will become a hub for music education and research this summer as the Department of Music Education hosts the ninth annual International Symposium on the Sociology of Music Education (ISSME) together with the MayDay Group (MDG) Colloquium 27 research conference. It is the first time both organizations will meet together to present research, cultivate scholarly dialogue, network and participate in collaborative research activity. The event will be held June 14-19. Full registration is $125 and $85 for students; banquet registration is $30.

Edward McClellan, Ph.D., Loyola associate professor and coordinator of music education and Mary Freeman Wisdom distinguished professor of music, first proposed the collaboration in April 2014 and is coordinating the event.

The ISSME symposium welcomes qualitative, quantitative, mixed-method or philosophical research and scholarly investigations into a wide range of contexts, such as schools, universities, festivals, communities, the media, homes and the Internet. ”Music education” is understood to include all forms of teaching and learning music — formal, informal and non-formal.

The MayDay27 Colloquium will examine how social, cultural and political contexts of musical actions are integrally tied to the nature and values of all human activity and a secure theoretical foundation that unites the actions of music with the various contexts and meanings of those actions is essential to music education in both research and practice.

In addition to the 90 music educators, scholars and researchers from Africa, Canada, England, Germany, Ireland, Latin America, Norway, South Korea, Sweden, and the U.S. will participate in this conference to present research, collaborate and network during this week.

The conference will include keynote addresses by the following prominent scholars in music education:

  • David Elliott, Ph.D., professor of music education, New York University
  • Hildegard Froehlich, Ph.D., professor of music education emeritus, University of North Texas
  • J. Terry Gates, Ph.D., president/CEO, the Hoenny Center For Research And Development In Teaching
  • Geir Johansen, Ph.D., professor of music education, Norwegian Academy of Music
  • Roberta Lamb, Ed.D., associate professor of music education, Queen’s University, Ontario Canada
  • Marie McCarthy, Ph.D., professor of music education, University of Michigan
  • Thomas Regelski, Ph.D., distinguished professor emeritus, State University of New York at Fredonia NY
  • Marissa Silverman, Ph.D., associate professor of music education, Montclair State University
