Loyola offers 'Hollywood South' screenplay class and other community writing classes
Loyola press release - June 9, 2014
Responding to New Orleans’ burgeoning film industry and tapping into the growing trend of “Hollywood South,” the Walker Percy Center for Writing and Publishing at Loyola University New Orleans is offering a new screenplay writing class set for June 17 to Aug. 5 as a part of its lineup of summer creative writing classes. Five other non-credit community creative writing classes, all taught by published writers, meet one evening a week for eight weeks beginning the week of June 15. Registration is now open and seats are limited.
Offered through the Loyola Writing Institute, the creative writing classes are held in convenient locations across the New Orleans metro area at the St. Tammany Art Association in Covington on the Northshore, downtown at The Healing Center in the Marigny and Loyola’s Uptown campus.
“We're particularly pleased to be establishing a presence in Covington on the Northshore, which of course was Walker Percy's home and where there has been a resurgence of interest in him,” said Christopher Chambers, Loyola English professor and director of the Walker Percy Center for Writing and Publishing.
Classes are available to adults 21 and older and are open to all levels—from published writers to new writers. The Writing Institute classes are not for Loyola credit and are only open to those not enrolled as full-time students. Courses cost $250 for each eight-week session.
In addition to the screenplay writing class taught by award-winning filmmaker and Loyola alumnus Mike Miley ‘01, classes also include “Writing Creative Nonfiction, “Writing the Short Story,” “Writing Poetry,” “Write Now: Developing a Writing Practice” and “Writing Well-Crafted Fiction.” Full class descriptions, locations for each class and teacher biographies are available online.
To enroll, send completed enrollment form along with a check payable to: Walker Percy Center, Box 157, 6363 St. Charles Ave., New Orleans, LA 70118. For more information, contact Chambers at 504-865-2475.
