Loyola to feature first full-service university Starbucks in the city

Loyola press release - May 27, 2014

The Loyola University New Orleans Danna Student Center will soon feature the first full-service university Starbucks in the entire Crescent City and only the third fully licensed, university-based Starbucks in the state. Preparations for the new Starbucks begin this summer; the coffee shop will open for business in time for the fall semester beginning in August.

Starbucks will offer its full line of coffees, teas and blended drinks, including organic, Fair Trade and ethically sourced products. The new location will also offer part-time employment opportunities for students.

The arrival of Starbucks will be accompanied by a remodel of the Danna Student Center coffee lounge, including new flooring, new seating and the addition of a large community table in the lounge. This Starbucks replaces Community Coffee House.

The change is in response to a series of campus-wide surveys conducted last May by Uptown Campus Dining—a partnership among Loyola, Tulane University and Sodexo. Survey respondents overwhelmingly voted for Starbucks as the top choice coffee brand desired—77 percent voted for Starbucks.

“We are excited to bring a brand so well known for quality and service to the Loyola community,” said Heather Bacque, director of dining services. “We are also proud to offer both national and local coffee brands through Uptown Campus Dining. New Orleans’ own PJ’s Coffee is available in multiple locations at Tulane University, our Uptown Campus Dining partner.” Uptown Campus Dining offers multiple dining options for both Tulane and Loyola students who are able to take advantage of those options on both campuses with one meal plan.

“A key element of our support of Starbucks is its values and business conduct,” Bacque said. “The company has three main commitments, which are community involvement, environmental stewardship and ethical sourcing.”

During the summer break, The Sweet Shop located on Loyola’s campus in the Danna Center will be open weekday mornings serving Fair Trade, sustainably sourced coffee by Aspretto. The Sweet Shop is also serving the local favorite, Blue Dot Donuts, which were introduced this month to brisk sales.
