Newly renovated design studios open in Loyola's Monroe Hall

The Graphic Design Program at Loyola University New Orleans will showcase Monroe Hall’s newly renovated fifth floor design studios Friday, Jan. 17 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. during a “Space Invasion,” an open house event offering the Loyola community the opportunity to take tours of the new facilities, play games, make buttons and enjoy light refreshments.

The new facilities feature three design studios, two elements studios and two teaching computer labs with state-of-the-art projection and surround sound systems. The floor also includes improved classrooms, a screen printing room, darkroom and digital printing and equipment lab. Multiple lounge and vending spaces are also located throughout.

“We are so proud of our new space and the opportunities that will now be available to our students,” associate professor of graphic design Daniela Marx said. “Each student will be assigned a dedicated studio space where they will work for the entire year, providing them an undisturbed, consistent area to draw, paint, build and create.”

An “Inspiration Wall” in one of the main corridors will exhibit photos, quotes and drawings from the students’ favorite designers and artists. A collaborative typographical sculpture created by all of the current design students will also be on display.

According to Marx, the open house is an opportunity to educate and inspire the campus and local communities. “This event allows us to educate people about what design really is,” Marx said. “We need to change the local mindset that the only tool for design is the computer, when in fact it incorporates drawing, building and other essential elements of visual arts.”

The fifth floor transformation is part of the overall Monroe Hall renovation, which began in 2012. The completed project will result in technology updates, improved classrooms and new and upgraded meeting spaces throughout the building.
