Loyola recognized as Louisiana's only College of Distinction
Loyola press release - August 5, 2013
Loyola University New Orleans was selected as a 2013-14 College of Distinction by the online guide for college-bound students, counselors and parents. Loyola was the only Louisiana university selected for the guide this year.
Colleges of Distinction is a free online college guide selecting schools based on the success of graduates, the quality of teaching and the campus atmosphere, rather than providing rankings of “top schools.” Its goal is to provide students, counselors and parents with information about schools that excel in these key areas. The site describes schools that take a holistic approach to admissions decisions, that consistently excel in providing undergraduate education, and that have a truly national reputation.
“Loyola is especially proud to be named a College of Distinction as the honor highlights Loyola’s commitment to the education of the whole person in the Jesuit tradition. The real value of a Loyola education is best measured by how our students are transformed through their experiences both in and out of the classroom,” said Roberta Kaskel, interim vice president for enrollment management.
Loyola was named for its continued commitment to the four distinctions:
- The university is successful at engaging students, offering through its Center for International Education many exciting educational and cultural opportunities to study abroad in places such as Belgium, England, France, China, India, Ireland, Spain and Mexico, among others. Students receive academic credit for their participation and gain many significant experiences they can apply to their education at Loyola, graduate work or employment. The guide also highlights Loyola’s Office of Service Learning for coordinating opportunities for students to combine community service with classroom instruction, focusing on critical, reflective thinking, as well as civic and personal responsibility.
- Loyola is recognized for its focus on great teaching, including its diverse and experienced faculty available to give students the personal attention they need to achieve success. Loyola is also recognized in this area for its common curriculum, which offers a broad range of courses for students to explore multiple disciplines as all students are required to take common curriculum courses, regardless of their declared major.
- Loyola also achieves successful outcomes for its graduates, involving Loyola’s Career Development Center, which assists students in assessing career opportunities, exploring career resources and developing skills for their job search.
- The university is part of a vibrant community that few other cities can match. In addition to Loyola's location in the heart of one of the most prestigious neighborhoods in New Orleans, Loyola students participate in more than 120 student organizations and activities, including the student-run University Programming Board and an active Greek system.
Colleges of Distinction also gives an unbiased look at the college admissions process. The guide explores the myths surrounding college admissions, provides tools for self-assessment, and provides insights from college admissions professionals, high school counselors, students and parents.
