Loyola student journalists, PR staff win 6 press club awards

Loyola University New Orleans student journalists of The Maroon newspaper along with the university’s public relations and marketing staff won six awards in the 55th Annual Press Club of New Orleans Excellence in Journalism contest. Loyola mass communication and political science double major Lucy Dieckhaus also received one of two $2,500 scholarships awarded by the Press Club of New Orleans this year.

“These are exciting awards, especially because the Press Club does not offer a student category. These awards were won competing against the professional journalism community, truly showing how our students and graduates are the best in the business,” said Michael Giusti ‘00, M.B.A. ‘12, journalism instructor and student media adviser.

The Maroon won second place in the Print Special Section category for its “Centennial” section, which gave a historical retrospective on Loyola using a combination of original writing and reprinting of historically significant pieces from the university’s past. The second place honor went to the staff as a whole.

The Maroon’s cartoonist, Sydney Barbier, also won a second place award for best editorial cartoon for a piece lampooning fake IDs. Precious Esie won third place for an infographic detailing the dangers and prevalence of date rape drugs. Daniel Quick won third place for an editorial he wrote regarding the bomb threat on Monroe Hall in 2012.

“The Loyola School of Mass Communication trains its students with a high level of professionalism and ethics so students are equipped to cover real stories and issues relevant to the community with the same level of quality as professional journalists here in New Orleans,” said Sonya F. Duhé, Ph.D., Loyola professor and director of the School of Mass Communication.

The work of the Office of Marketing and Communications garnered awards in two categories. Loyola’s partnership with FSC Inter@ctive for the 100 Days of Giving fundraising campaign won first place in the Public Relations Social Media category. Judges’ comments on the social media campaign praised it as “solid strategic planning, execution and results” and “good integration of Web and social media platforms.” Loyola’s Centennial Celebration won third place in the Public Relations Campaign category.

The awards also highlighted involvement from other Loyola faculty and staff. Robert Thomas, Ph.D., director of the Loyola Center for Environmental Communication, was featured in the “Reshaping Greater New Orleans: Rebuilding Our Coast” program on WYES-TV. That project, by Marcia Kavanaugh and Paula Pendarvis-Milham, won first place in the Science/Health/Technology TV category.

New Loyola staffer Eve Peyton also won first place for her weekly blog, Joie d’Eve. Before joining Loyola May 28 as director of editorial services, Peyton created the blog for MyNewOrleans.com. It was also reprinted monthly in New Orleans Magazine.
