Loyola names new dean for College of Humanities and Natural Sciences

Loyola press release - February 13, 2013

Loyola University New Orleans announced Maria Calzada, Ph.D., as the new dean for the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences. A committed mathematics professor and scholar, Calzada joined Loyola’s faculty in 1991 and has served as the interim dean for the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences since fall 2012. She will officially begin her new post in July.

Calzada quickly moved up the ranks at Loyola to professor. In 2004, she was appointed as the arts and science intern for the First Year Experience in the dean’s office where she led faculty development activities and organized events for first-year students. In 2009, former dean Jo Ann Moran Cruz, Ph.D., appointed Calzada to the position of science liaison, which she held until becoming interim dean.

“Her dedication to teaching and her commitment to excellence in scholarship are important characteristics of Dr. Calzada that will help ensure the continued success of the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences,” said Marc Manganaro, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs at Loyola.

Calzada holds a doctorate and master’s degree in mathematics from Tulane University. She received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and economics at Boston College. She received the Loyola Faculty Senate Teaching Award in August 2004 and was recognized as a Mathematics Teacher of Distinction that same year by the Greater New Orleans Teachers of Mathematics. She is also a recipient of the Order of St. Louis award recognizing her leadership and service to the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

“I am very happy to have been selected dean of the College of Humanities and Natural Sciences. I have enjoyed working with the faculty, staff, students and administrators this past year as interim dean and look forward to continue working with all,” Calzada said.

“The next few years present a number of opportunities: the implementation of our new common curriculum and the large number of remodeling and construction projects are just a sample. With a committed faculty, staff and student population, I look forward to working with everyone to make the opportunities great successes,” she said.
