Centennial Mass of the Holy Spirit helps celebrate start of school year

Loyola press release - August 17, 2012

Loyola University New Orleans’ Centennial Mass of the Holy Spirit is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 13, in Holy Name of Jesus Church. Loyola President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D., will be the principal celebrant. Faculty, administrators, staff and students are all encouraged to attend the Mass, an important and long-standing tradition at Loyola and other Jesuit institutions. The event is planned and coordinated by University Ministry.

Most Catholic schools, and especially Jesuit high schools and universities, celebrate the Mass of the Holy Spirit at the beginning of every school year. It is a tradition almost as old as the Society of Jesus itself, dating back to the first Jesuit school in Messina, Sicily, in 1548.

All 11 a.m. classes will be canceled so members of the Loyola community can attend the celebration. All faculty and staff are asked to assemble, without regalia, in Ignatius Chapel on the first floor of Bobet Hall at 11 a.m., in order to process to the church.

Students are asked to wear their club or organization t-shirt or uniform and to assemble with their organization on the horseshoe side of Holy Name of Jesus Church at 11:15 a.m. in order to process in at the beginning of Mass.
