Alumni College to examine the state of New Orleans media

Larry Lorenz, Ph.D., professor emeritus in the Loyola University New Orleans School of Mass Communication, will examine the ever-changing face of media in New Orleans as a part of the inaugural Alumni College, which will be held on Loyola's main campus June 22-24. "The Press of New Orleans: The Past. The Present. The Future?" will take place on Friday, June 22 at 3:30 p.m. and will focus on the history of New Orleans' main newspaper, The Times-Picayune, and discuss its future, in light of the recent announcement that the newspaper will print only three days a week as it shifts to an online media format.
This class is one of many courses that will be taught by Loyola’s outstanding current and retired faculty and alumni, and will be grouped into tracks that will help identify topics of particular interest. There will be four tracks, six sessions per track, and a joint session on Sunday, taught by University President Kevin Wm. Wildes, S.J., Ph.D.
Tracks will include:
- New Orleans and the World, a look at the history of New Orleans and Louisiana;
- Art and Culture, a glimpse of music, literature and art in New Orleans;
- Loyola and the Jesuit Mission, an extraordinary blend of theological insight and historical perspective from Jesuits;
- Politics and Society, aspects of society that bring life to New Orleans.
When not in class, attendees will be able to socialize with fellow alumni, Loyola faculty and administrators and attend a Mass or concert. Three complimentary field trips are also available, including a visit to the National WWII Museum, a tour by Loyola visual arts professor Mark Grote, M.F.A., of the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Museum of Art and a post-Katrina tour led by environmental communication professor Bob Thomas, Ph.D. A Friday evening dinner at Arnaud’s is also planned, but not included in the registration cost.
Registration is available for $275 per person for the entire weekend or $150 per person to attend Saturday events only. Registration for young alumni (Classes 2001-12) is $175 per person for the entire weekend or $95 per person for Saturday only. The cost includes session fees, meals (excluding dinner at Arnaud’s Restaurant) and parking.
