Loyola alumnus tapped to run WWL-TV

Loyola press release - June 15, 2012

Loyola University New Orleans alumnus Tod Smith ’84 will return home to New Orleans as the new president and general manager of WWL-TV and affiliated properties WUPL-TV, NewsWatch 15 and WWLTV.com. Smith will replace Bud Brown, who is retiring after seven years at WWL.

“I'm honored and humbled to work with a team that understands the responsibility that comes with serving our communities, and we will continue to earn their trust every day,” Smith said. “There's a spirit in this community, and it fills this station as well. I'm proud to have a chance to serve them both.”

Smith, who graduated with a degree in business administration, began his broadcasting career at WWL in 1980 as a production assistant. At the time, the station was still owned by Loyola. He worked in a variety of different roles before being named a marketing executive in 1993. Smith was promoted to research director in 1995 and later became local sales manager before going on to hold the position of general manager at WWL’s sister stations in Norfolk, Va., and Tucson, Ariz., also owned and operated by parent company, Belo Corp.

“WWL-TV and Loyola will always have a special bond, and to have one of our alumni running the station this university founded just seems right,” said Sonya Duhé, Ph.D., director of Loyola’s School of Mass Communication.

Smith is leaving his position as general manager of WVEC-TV in Norfolk, where last year he hired former WWL news anchor and Loyola alumna Lucy Bustamante ’04. Smith will take charge of his new duties in July.
