School of Nursing DNP program gains major accreditation

Loyola press release - June 11, 2012

The Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing recently reached another milestone by gaining highly coveted accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education for its Doctor of Nursing Practice program. A statement mandated by the U.S. Department of Education and released by the commission confirmed the accreditation.

“The DNP program at Loyola University New Orleans is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, One Dupont Circle, NW, Suite 530, Washington, D.C. 20036, 202-887-6791,” the commission said.

The accreditation lasts until 2017 and will encompass both the School of Nursing’s post-Master of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice program, as well as the newly created post-Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice track.

“Our faculty and staff have worked very hard to put together a comprehensive and progressive curriculum that addresses the needs of a changing healthcare system,” said Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., director of the School of Nursing. “To be accredited by such a prestigious organization just two years after enrolling our first DNP class says volumes about the direction our program is headed.”

In order to gain accreditation, the School of Nursing had to demonstrate a commitment of institutional resources, proper mission governance, quality curriculum and teaching practices, and program effectiveness.

The commission’s board of directors awarded Loyola accreditation status retroactively to the date of the last site evaluation in November 2011, meaning that all Loyola DNP graduates are alumni of a CCNE accredited program. The School of Nursing is required to submit a Continuous Improvement Progress Report to the commission, offering any updates on their program, no later than Dec. 1, 2014.
