Mass Communication students rack up journalism awards

Several students from the Loyola University New Orleans School of Mass Communication were recently recognized for exceptional journalism by two professional media organizations.

Members of The Maroon staff were singled out by the Society of Professional Journalists, being awarded the organization’s Mark of Excellence. The awards are given out annually for exceptional work in the field of college journalism and are broken down by region. The SPJ Region 12 winners are:

  • Precious Esie, Carl Harrison, Leslie Gamboni and Jamie Futral, first place, in-depth reporting
  • Masako Hirsch, second place, general news reporting
  • Camara Thomas, third place, sports writing
  • The Maroon, third place, best all-around non-daily student newspaper

Additionally, two Loyola students were recognized for their outstanding work at the Louisiana/Mississippi Associated Press Managing Editors Awards ceremony held two weeks ago in downtown New Orleans, They are:

  • Jamie Futral, first place, feature writing
  • Craig Malveaux, second place, sports writing

“We are all very proud of all the recognition bestowed upon our student journalists,” said Sonya Duhé, Ph.D., director of the School of Mass Communication. “By winning these awards, it only solidifies Loyola’s reputation for putting out quality journalists. The communications community knows that if you graduate from Loyola, you can come in and perform at a high level from day one.”
