Dr. Michael Giorlando honored at NABC luncheon
Loyola press release - April 16, 2012
Loyola University New Orleans Head Men’s Basketball Coach and Director of Athletics and Wellness Dr. Michael Giorlando was recently honored at the National Association of Basketball Coaches Hillyard Champions Luncheon. NABC member coaches who led their collegiate team to regular season conference championships were recognized. Giorlando led the Wolfpack to the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division championship this season.
The Wolfpack enjoyed their best year under Giorlando, finishing the season 20-10 overall and 11-7 in SSAC play. The Wolfpack earned the best regular season winning percentage (.679) and their first 20-win season since Jack Orsley’s 1947-48 squad.
This is the second honor for the men’s basketball team in the last three weeks. Last month, the team was presented the 2011-12 Buffalo Funds Five Star Champions of Character Team award from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Teams that receive this prestigious award demonstrate everyday decisions of respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship. These athletic programs strive for excellence in and out of competition and are part of communities throughout the country dedicated to character-driven intercollegiate athletics.
“I’m very humbled to receive these two awards from the NABC and the NAIA on behalf of Loyola University New Orleans,” Giorlando said. “To be recognized along with the best in college basketball is quite an honor. This is a testament to the hard work of our players and our assistant coaches. I also want to thank the entire Wolfpack community for their support this season.”
