Loyola students, staff win public relations awards

The work of Loyola University New Orleans public relations students and its Office of Marketing and Communications team won multiple awards from the Public Relations Society of America New Orleans chapter during an awards presentation Nov. 15 at the World War II Museum’s American Sector Cafe. The awards recognized Loyola’s outstanding public relations efforts—much of which centered on this year’s centennial.

Loyola’s 2012 Bateman team won an award of excellence for its “Choose Dat, Not Dis” campaign to fight childhood obesity. The creative, strategic and culturally relevant campaign aimed to increase awareness among children, teenagers and their parents of the consequences of obesity as well as steps to adopt a healthier lifestyle, according to faculty adviser Jeffrey Ory, ABC, APR. The award recognizes students Maggie Moore, Alexandra Broussard, Jack Lien, Wade Kimbro and Nhi Tieu. The campaign won first place in the national Public Relations Student Society of America Bateman competition earlier this year.

Loyola’s overall Centennial Celebration won an award of merit under the “Extended Special Events/Observances for a Nonprofit” category. The planning of the centennial was more than four years in the making and its roll-out included several special events, the creation of promotional and collateral items, the production of a centennial website and video, targeted media outreach and advertising. Meredith Hartley, director of the Office of Public Affairs and External Relations, submitted the award entry.

The Founder’s Day Celebration, which served as a major kick-off to the yearlong centennial, won an award of merit in the “Brief Special Events/Observances for a Nonprofit” category. The day-long celebration was held April 14 and included a concert with the premiere of the “Ignatian Fanfare” by the Loyola Concert Band, an overview of Loyola’s history by professor Bernard Cook, Ph.D., a celebratory Mass, and a picnic celebration featuring major guests, bands and a show-stopping fireworks display. The entire day’s events drew nearly 2,000 guests to Loyola’s campus. Angela Vachetta Turnbull, special events coordinator, submitted the entry.

The Centennial Media Kit, a robust resource for news media, won an award of merit in the “Media Kits” category. The kit included Loyola’s centennial press release, an historical overview of the university, a list of its major milestones, the centennial issue of “LOYNO” alumni magazine, and a DVD containing digital versions of the above plus historical and contemporary images of the university, the centennial video and a link to the centennial website. James Shields, communications coordinator, submitted the entry.

Loyola walked away with another award of merit in the “Print/Other” category for the 2011-2012 Montage calendar. The colorful calendar highlights and lists more than 100 arts and entertainment events, including last year’s main event—The Priests, a chart-topping musical group of three Northern Ireland Catholic priests. Jess Brown, communications and artist relations manager, submitted the entry.
