Loyola Opera presents a Verdi and Wagner Concert

Loyola press release - September 19, 2011

Loyola Opera Theatre presents an evening of selected works by romantic composers Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Wagner on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 7:30 p.m. in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on the corner of St. Charles Avenue and Calhoun Street.

Husband and wife duo Tyler Smith and Betsy Uschkrat, instructors in Loyola’s music department, will join special guest accompanist Dilyara Shiderova, baritone James Martin, and mezzo soprano Sarah Mabary in a recital of arias, songs, duets and ensembles not normally experienced by local audiences.

“The recital will be a real culmination of works by Verdi and Wagner, and it will be high drama at its best,” said Smith. “The performance is not one-dimensional at all, and with varying timbres and works from every period of these composers, the audience will recognize many of these songs and stay interested.” The evening will include melodies from “Otello,” “Rigoletto,” “Die Walküre,” “Die Meistersinger,” and more.

This is Smith and Uschkrat’s first concert together at Loyola University. “We’re very excited to perform together, but we’re also thrilled that our students will get the opportunity to see us perform on stage,” said Uschkrat.

The couple maintains an active performance career throughout the U.S., and plans a repeat performance at Millsaps College later this month.

Admission to the event is free. For more information contact Jess Brown in Loyola’s Office of Public Affairs at jlbrown@loyno.edu or call 504-861-5882.
