The Maroon named top non-daily college newspaper in the region

Loyola press release - April 14, 2011

Loyola’s Maroon was honored as the region’s best non-daily college newspaper, receiving the coveted Mark of Excellence Award by the Society of Professional Journalists. The Maroon bested colleges and universities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and Arkansas, and the award ranks the paper among the top 12 non-daily college papers in the nation.

In addition to the top prize, Loyola’s student magazine, The Wolf, received third place. SPJ also singled out individual Loyola students for recognition. They include:

  • Second Place: Best editorial writing (Alex Fournet)
  • Third Place: General News Reporting (Craig Malveaux)
  • Third Place: In-Depth Reporting (Precious Esie)

"It is both humbling and exciting to get such a significant recognition. Being named the top non-daily college publication in the region and among the top 12 in the nation really makes me feel good about the work our staff does,” said student media adviser and journalism instructor Michael Giusti.

Entries are first judged on the regional level, with the top spot advancing to the national competition. National winners will be notified following the SPJ fall conference and showcased on www.spj.org.
