Loyola provost honored with new professorship
Loyola press release - November 16, 2011
In honor of Loyola University New Orleans Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Edward J. Kvet, D.M.E., the College of Music and Fine Arts recently announced the new Edward J. Kvet Professorship in Music and Fine Arts.
Kvet, who accepted the position of provost in 2008, served as the dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts for 10 years. He began working at Loyola in 1982 and will retire as provost at the end of the 2011-12 academic year.
During a surprise celebration at the home of Emel and Ranney Mize, colleagues, visiting committee members and donors gathered to unveil the new professorship, which will promote excellence in teaching and scholarship in the field of music. In a special tribute to Kvet’s work in music, Loyola students Alex and Adam Mayon performed selections on trumpet and piano.
“I was humbled by the honor and grateful to the many individuals who provided financial support for this professorship,” Kvet said. “This endowed gift will provide much needed support to future generations of outstanding music faculty members in the College of Music and Fine Arts.”
After Kvet left his position as dean in 2008, members of the College of Music and Fine Arts visiting committee united to create a professorship in honor of his tenure as dean. In May 2011, following several years of fundraising by the committee, the Board of Regents of Louisiana matched the initial funding.
“Ed Kvet has been a major force in the arts in New Orleans for many years, and his work as dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts, and later provost of the university, has been exemplary. Without his efforts and commitment to the students and faculty of this college, we would not enjoy the wonderful reputation and support that we currently have in the community,” said Donald Boomgaarden, dean of the College of Music and Fine Arts.
