Cost comparison another reason Loyola's School of Nursing lives up to national ranking

Loyola press release - October 28, 2011

Loyola University New Orleans School of Nursing is consistently ranked by both U.S. News & World Report and thebestcolleges.com as having one of the premier nursing schools in the country. A recent cost breakdown of comparable nursing schools offering the post-Bachelor of Science in Nursing to Doctor of Nursing Practice and the post-master’s to Doctor of Nursing Practice programs, highlights why.

Research shows that Loyola is significantly less expensive than other comparable universities offering a doctorate degree in nursing. For instance, obtaining a post-B.S.N. to D.N.P. degree at Vanderbilt costs the average student $124,748, compared to just $57,288 at Loyola. At St. Louis University, tuition and fees put the price tag at $70,095, and to get the same degree at Loyola University Chicago, it will cost $69,180.

For nursing students already holding a master’s and interested in obtaining a D.N.P. degree, Loyola again proves to be a great investment at $28,272 for 38 graduate hours of instruction. Vanderbilt and Loyola University Chicago cost $59,268 and $36,840, respectively.

Other universities on thebestcolleges.com list, such as Emory University and the University of Pennsylvania, do not even offer D.N.P. programs.

“We feel that being ranked by U.S. News & World Report and thebestcolleges.com list is validation of the quality of the programs that we have developed at Loyola,” said Ann H. Cary, Ph.D., director of the School of Nursing at Loyola. “We are also very proud that we have been able to make higher education more affordable to the next generation of working nurses.”

The 2011 U.S. News & World Report placed Loyola in the top 30 percent of the 467 nursing schools examined by the publication, while thebestcolleges.com ranked Loyola’s online B.S.N. to M.S.N. program as the eighth best in the country. It is also the only D.N.P. program in the state of Louisiana.

The deadline for early-decision application for the 2011-12 D.N.P. online programs is Nov. 1, 2011 and final deadline is Jan. 31, 2012. Application and detailed program information are available at http://css.loyno.edu/nursing/doctor-nursing-practice.
